The Smart ForFour is a compact city car that served as the four-door, four-seat counterpart to the brand’s smaller ForTwo model. Designed for urban practicality while retaining the distinctive Smart styling, it offered more interior space and versatility than its two-seater sibling. Over its production history, the ForFour went through two distinct generations. The first generation, launched in 2004, was co-developed with Mitsubishi and shared a platform with the Colt.
After a break in production, the second generation debuted in 2014 with a design more closely aligned to the ForTwo. Known for its nimble handling, compact footprint, and ease of parking, the ForFour appealed to city drivers who needed extra seating and cargo flexibility. However, Smart has since discontinued the ForFour, focusing solely on electric two-seater models. In Saudi Arabia, it is now available only as a used import through specialty dealers or private sales.
Imported Smart ForFour models vary in specifications depending on the generation and trim. Many second-generation versions feature a rear-mounted three-cylinder petrol engine, available in naturally aspirated or turbocharged variants producing between 63 and 94 horsepower, paired with either a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The rear-wheel-drive layout is unusual for a city car, contributing to its tight turning radius and agile maneuverability. In markets where electric variants were offered, the ForFour Electric Drive provided a zero-emission option, though these are rarer in the KSA used market. Fuel efficiency for petrol models typically averages between 4.2 and 5 liters per 100 kilometers, making it economical to run.
The Smart ForFour’s exterior design combines urban-friendly proportions with a slightly more elongated profile compared to the ForTwo, allowing space for rear doors and additional passengers. It retains the brand’s signature Tridion safety cell, often finished in a contrasting color to the body panels, creating a distinctive two-tone look.
Short overhangs at both ends improve maneuverability, while large headlamps and a friendly grille design give it a playful personality. Higher trims and special editions may feature alloy wheels, panoramic roofs, and sporty body kits, adding to their visual appeal.
Inside, the Smart ForFour is designed to maximize passenger space within its compact footprint. The cabin can accommodate four adults for short trips, with front seats offering good comfort and rear seats suitable for city journeys. The rear seats can fold flat to expand cargo space, making the ForFour more versatile than many city cars in its size category. The dashboard design is modern and minimalist, with circular air vents, simple control layouts, and fabric panel inserts that add color and texture. Depending on trim, features may include air conditioning, touchscreen infotainment with smartphone connectivity, and premium sound systems.
Technology in the Smart ForFour includes urban-focused features such as a tight 8.65-meter turning circle, hill start assist, and available parking sensors or cameras. Higher trims may offer keyless entry, heated seats, and upgraded infotainment systems. The robust Tridion safety cell, multiple airbags, stability control, and ABS support safety. While advanced driver assistance systems were limited compared to larger cars, the ForFour’s agility and compact size inherently contribute to safer maneuvering in congested environments.
As the Smart ForFour is discontinued and only available in KSA through used imports, warranty coverage depends on the seller. Some dealers may offer limited warranties for a few months, while others may sell it as-is. Maintenance is relatively straightforward for petrol variants, with parts availability supported by Smart’s connection to Mercedes-Benz. However, some trim-specific components and body panels may require special ordering from overseas. The electric versions require specialist servicing for their battery systems, which may be less widely available locally.
In the KSA used market, the Smart ForFour competes with compact city cars such as the Fiat 500, MINI 5-Door Hatch, and Toyota Yaris. Its distinctive design, rear-engine layout, and premium urban feel set it apart from more conventional hatchbacks. Buyers are often drawn to it for its blend of style, practicality, and maneuverability in tight urban settings.
