Uber Partners with Saudi-Backed Lucid and Nuro to Launch Robotaxis

Uber robotaxi

Imagine a future where sleek self-driving vehicles pick you up.  No driver, just advanced AI guiding you effortlessly through the city.  That future just got a considerable step closer, as Uber partners with Saudi-backed electric vehicle maker Lucid Motors and US robotics giant Nuro to launch a revolutionary Uber Robotaxi program.

This bold partnership signals Uber’s commitment to lead the autonomous transport race and promises a transformative shift in global mobility.

Uber’s Mega Investment in Self-Driving Tech

Uber plans to pour millions of dollars into this cutting-edge collaboration, making a bold bet on the future of self-driving technology. The program is scheduled to launch in a major US city in late 2026, with expansion plans on the horizon.

At the core of this initiative are 20,000 luxury electric vehicles from Lucid Motors. Nuro’s 4-level autonomous driving platform powers each of them. This means the cars will be able to operate without human input in most conditions, offering proper hands-free mobility.

The prototype robotaxi is already undergoing autonomous testing in Las Vegas, setting the stage for a larger launch in late 2026.

Sustainable and Smart Cities on the Horizon

This isn’t just for tech’s sake; however, Uber robotaxis are poised to reshape cities, reduce emissions, and dramatically improve urban life. According to Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, “Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better.”

This venture supports the global push towards sustainability, aligning perfectly with international climate goals and the vision of brighter and cleaner cities.

Nuro’s groundbreaking AI platform integrates advanced safety systems, ensuring every Uber robotaxi ride is as safe as possible. Rugged testing, spanning simulated environments, closed circuits, and supervised street tests. Meaning customers can sit in the back, knowing they are in good robotic hands.

Future Prospects

Despite significant strides, experts note that achieving full autonomy (Level 5)—where vehicles might even lack steering wheels and pedals—is still decades away. A 2023 report by GlobalData predicts that this complete shift could take up to 20 years.

Yet, the Uber-Lucid-Nuro partnership represents an essential milestone toward that vision. Marc Winterhoff, Lucid’s interim CEO, highlighted this collaboration as “the start of our path to extend our innovation and technology leadership into this multi-trillion-dollar market.”

Will Uber Robotaxis Come to the Middle East?

With Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund backing Lucid Motors, there’s intense speculation about future robotaxi deployment in regions like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Uber’s global presence—with operations in 70 countries and over 34 million daily trips—positions it ideally to lead the charge, making autonomous transport widely accessible.
