Six New Models Earn Five-Star Safety Rating from ANCAP
Australian new-car buyers just got a huge confidence boost, with ANCAP announcing that six very different vehicles, from a pint-sized EV to a hardworking ute, have all earned five-star safety ratings in the latest round of testing. The standout list includes the BYD ATTO 1, Nissan Navara, Volvo EX90, Mini Aceman, MG QS, and the updated Tesla Model Y.
ANCAP highlighted that this diverse group shows “the ongoing ability of manufacturers to achieve five-star ratings across a mix of vehicle types.” The achievement proves that five-star safety is no longer limited to premium or large vehicles. It’s now a realistic expectation for almost any segment.
Noteworthy Highlights from Each Vehicle
Each model has earned its five-star rating thanks to strong performance in key safety tests:
BYD ATTO 1: Despite its compact size, the BYD ATTO 1 excelled in adult occupant protection, especially in side-impact and pole tests. It also received high marks for child seat installation.
Nissan Navara: The Navara achieved a five-star rating for crash performance and safety features. It also boasts strong crash-avoidance capabilities, shared with its sibling, the Mitsubishi Triton.
Tesla Model Y: The updated Model Y continues to perform well. Earning top scores in crash avoidance, safety-assist features, and lane-support systems.
Volvo EX90: The Volvo EX90’s strong results in occupant protection, active bonnet system, and driver-monitoring features made it a standout.
Mini Aceman: The Mini Aceman impressed with its stability in crash tests and its effective AEB systems for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
MG QS: The MG QS also earned a five-star rating. However, a weak chest result for rear passengers was noted in the full-width frontal test.
Why These Ratings Matter for Car Buyers
Car buyers are increasingly prioritizing safety when making purchasing decisions. ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg explained, “These results show that manufacturers are meeting the requirements of modern safety protocols for a range of vehicles and price points, from the Nissan Navara to large and small electric vehicles.“
For smaller vehicles like the BYD ATTO 1, earning a five-star safety rating is particularly significant. Hoorweg added, “Occupants of smaller cars are at greater risk due to their physical size, so this rating helps reinforce the benchmark for other manufacturers.”
These ratings also serve as valuable guidance for fleet managers. Now, they can choose from a broader range of safer vehicles across categories, including light commercial and electric models.
What to Look for in Your Next Vehicle
If safety is your priority, the latest ANCAP ratings offer some excellent options. Whether you’re interested in a compact EV or a rugged utility vehicle, a five-star safety rating assures you that the car meets the highest safety standards.
As manufacturers continue striving toward five-star safety, the message is clear. Safer roads and safer vehicles are becoming the new normal, and that’s a trend worth celebrating.
